In 1996 hosts South Africa claimed 53 gold, 45 silver and 30 bronze medals at the Fasu African Student Games in Pretoria and they will be hoping for a similar haul at this year's Games.
The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) named 59 men and 58 women in the team on Tuesday July 1.
South Africa's students will participate in eight sporting codes against university students from all over Africa at the biennial event in Kampala, Uganda between July 6-16.
This event is used as a stepping stone for global senior championships such as the Olympic Games and the Commonwealth Games, as well as the World Student Games, and a strong performance at the Fasu Games would bode well for South Africa's future in remaining the powerhouse of African sport.
This year's hosts, Uganda, finished third on the medal table two years ago, one place behind Algeria, and will be hoping for an improved performance on home soil.
